Labrinthectomy is ear surgery that severs the nerve to the hearing and balance part of the affected ear in the hope of abating vertigo attacks. Thereafter, that ear has no hearing, so the person is deaf in that ear. This is an invasive and destructive surgery. The surgery is routed through the mastoid bone to the labrynth after which the semicircular canals are physically removed and the nerve balance removed or severed. This cannot be reversed since parts of the ear no longer exist. It does not guarantee that balance issues will be fixed forever and
there is the possibility of disease affecting the other ear in the
future. People who are totally deaf and who experience intense vertigo might choose this operation because they already cannot hear.
